VMware Senior UI Engineer (Sr. MTS) - Tanzu Observability in Portland, Oregon

Location: Remote / West Coast hours

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need someone who can own the delivery of significant parts of the Tanzu Observability UI. You will be working on high-performance visualizations of the metric, histogram, and tracing data along with intuitive management and organization of application business logic. You will also work on visualizing AI-generated insights used for detecting anomalies in the system and RCA (root cause analysis). We are looking for someone who can closely work with the rest of the frontend and backend engineers and collaborate with the team to deliver key software features to our customers. What differentiates us in the current observability landscape is our intuitive, scalable and extremely powerful UI and you will play a key role in taking our platform to the next level.

Success in the role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • You will deliver new frontend features for VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront.

  • You will be expected to produce high quality frontend code using HTML5, ES6, CSS, React+Redux, hooks etc.

  • You will work closely with UX, Product Managers and backend engineers.

  • You will be expected to communicate complex concepts in technical and non-technical settings.

  • You will also be responsible for identification and resolution of technical debt.

  • During non-pandemic times, we spent most of our time in VMware office and we hope to return to the office someday. Right now, we’re all completely remote and remote teamwork is increasingly important to us. You should be able to collaborate remotely via Slack/Zoom etc.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As a key member of Tanzu Observability UI team,

  • You will work on the UI components for different pillars of observability (metrics, counters, histograms, traces, span logs, events, etc.)

  • You will work on high-performance interactive charting with Javascript and related technologies (canvas, svg, webgl).

  • You are expected to be familiar with frontend build processes (webpack, gulp, sass).

  • You should be a self-starter with a high attention to detail.

  • You should have good communication and presentation skills.

  • You will also provide significant technical leadership and direction for our front-end engineers.

The hiring manager for this role is Sushant Dewan, Senior Manager R&D. Sushant has worked for VMware for over 3 years. Prior to VMware, Sushant worked for Wavefront which was acquired by VMware in 2017. Post acquisition, Wavefront has broadened its scope from metrics monitoring to an enterprise-grade observability platform. Sushant currently leads a very vibrant and talented team of 12 engineers focussed on different pillars of Observability. VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront continues to have the original startup DNA with the stable backing of VMware.
