Work Unit Description


Functions/Duties of Position

Working in procedural care offers a unique opportunity for you to join a group that works in an exciting, fast-paced environment while providing patient-centered care.

Nurses are able to use their own independent scope of practice to develop individualized plans of care to help enhance the patient experience during complex procedures. In the Endoscopy Unit you will be able to administer, monitor and evaluate sedation in order to promote patient comfort. With the wide variety of advanced procedures you will be put in a setting to learn and grow by learning the best practices to use in the procedural areas.

The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit RN provides pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure care to adult patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures and studies.

Job Requirements


  • External applicants: Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • Internal applicants: Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)
  • BLS must not expire during orientation or probation period, and must have the same expiration date (upload documentation with online application)
  • Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools
  • Must have experience related to working in a fast paced environment that may ask you to care for up to 15 patients per day
  • Attention to detail: Heavy handling and administration of narcotics while moving at fast pace that requires ability to focus attention on details while performing other skills at the same time
  • Experience with EKG monitoring required
  • IV skills required
  • Moderate sedation experience
  • Certification in Basic Life Support
  • ACLS required at time of application
  • Confidence to work next to and communicate directly with MD throughout the shift
  • Telephone consultation
  • At least one year experience working in critical care or procedural area settingRequires ability to push patient in a stretcher around corners throughout the shift
  • Requires the ability to ride the Arial tram throughout the day
  • Requires the willingness to work with High Level Disinfectants
  • Requires the ability to work in a dark procedure room
  • Requires the ability to stay focused and have your assignment changed several times throughout your shift
  • Requires ability to triage patient symptoms over the telephone
  • Requires weekend call and ability to report to work within 30 min of being called – not required for Resource RN
  • Requires work in fluro room and standing for up to 3 hours wearing lead garments
  • Ability to move, turn, and lift sedated patients
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation


  • Current OHSU employees: BSN preferred
  • Experience with caring for patients undergoing GI Procedures and complications associated – required for resource nurses
  • Experience with GI Surgery or GI medicine and the disease processes associated with them
  • Motility and PH testing experience
  • Experience in fast paced unit where you provided care for more than 6 patients per shift
  • Phone triage skills


  • New Grads: 3-6 Months – When new grad position is available
  • Specialty Experience: 1-3 months
  • Experience, but not in specialty area: 2-4 months
  • Resource: 2 weeks and limited expose to roles within the department dependent on experience
