The successful candidate will work independently to molecular mechanisms used by different oral microbes to communicate with each other and to create robust biofilms within the oral cavity and other body sites. The study involves the understanding of how oral commensal bacteria can interact with potential pathogens to modulate their virulence properties. He/she will be responsible for most of the planning, implementation, and data interpretation associated with his/her research. Thus, the candidate will be expected to work independently with attention to detail and strong record-keeping. The goal is to understand what signals the commensal sends to keep the pathogens in check and what factors may upset pathogens to enhance their virulence. Typical techniques often involved include real-time PCR, western blot, protein expression/purification, coimmunoprecipitation, protein-protein/RNA-RNA interaction assays, gene expression analysis, targeted mutagenesis, and microscopy.

Demonstrable experience with these techniques is preferred. As a postdoctoral scholar, the candidate may also be involved with the training and supervision of students and junior staff as well as play an integral role in the management and supply ordering for the laboratory. Assistance with the development and preparation of grants/manuscripts will also be expected.

  • Doctorate degree in (genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or another relevant field)

  • Demonstrable experience with some or all of the following: bacterial genetics, protein chemistry, proteomics, coimmunoprecipitation, EMSA, RNA purification/analysis, gene expression/transcriptomics

  • Grant and/or manuscript preparation experience

  • Planning, implementation, and data interpretation experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Organizational and time management skills that maintain timeliness of work and accurate prioritization

  • Ability to train and supervise students and junior staff

  • Attention to detail and strong record keeping experience/skills

  • Able to conduct research in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced research environment, occasionally with tight deadlines

  • Able to work independently and exhibit self-motivation

  • Able to stand at a lab bench, sit at a microscope, perform laboratory manipulations, move and carry light lab equipment, perform image analysis experiments, operate computers and related software, communicate easily with co-workers and support staff, assist and instruct other lab members with scientific methods

  • Doctoral degree and/or postdoctoral research related to bacteriology

  • Experience/knowledge of the microbiome, especially the oral flora

  • Experience with oral bacterial and/or streptococcal genetics
