Burnside Shelter

The Burnside Shelter of Portland Rescue Mission hosts our 24-hour ministry 365 days of the year to individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction in downtown Portland. Comprehensive emergency services are available to any individual coming through our doors, and our highly relational staff provide compassionate, resource-rich care and opportunity to our guests. Broad services from immediate care to transitional shelter programming are provided by a skilled team focused on building relationships that serve to support growth away from the street environment. General Description of Work

Portland Rescue Mission is committed to equipping and leveraging gospel-centered churches and volunteers for significant ministry to people experiencing homelessness and addiction.

Working in conjunction with our Volunteer Team, this position will be responsible for the coordination of Breakfast and Evening Meal Ministry, Chapel Service, and Mission Trips, serving alongside and championing the work of these volunteer based opportunities with a particular emphasis on ministry happening in the evenings, with the goal to further recruit and mobilize gospel-centered churches and volunteers into deeper understanding and ministry impact.

This individual will have a passion and ability to mobilize volunteers and groups to serve people experiencing homelessness while also able to effectively serve alongside of them. An ability to handle details, engage people using exceptional customer service skills and communicate well (email, face to face, presentation) is required.

Essential Outcomes and Responsibilities

  • The volunteer ministry at the Burnside shelter will be maximized and all employees will be included in the effort to advance a volunteer- centered culture.

  • Evening Ministry groups will enact dynamic ministry on site each night, with a commitment to not only serve meals and meet felt needs, but also share the Gospel in highly relational and hope filled chapel services.

  • The recruitment process will be supported through providing web content and stories, presenting to groups and other recruitment efforts.

  • Volunteers are professionally and quickly responded to, leading to a dynamic community of engaged churches, groups, and individuals serving in roles on site.

  • Burnside Shelter volunteer roles are filled with individuals and groups that are the best possible match, with volunteer needs defined and communicated to the NLM Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Volunteers are effectively equipped for their role (e.g. background check, badge, guidelines training).

  • Volunteer training events happen consistently, with appreciation events and general communication a high priority, so that the volunteer community is connected, thanked, and supported to serve well.

  • The volunteer database (Volgistics) for the Burnside Shelter is up to date, accurate, and audited consistently towards the following outcomes of volunteer tracking systems, scheduling, job descriptions and statistics reporting.

Ministerial Duties

  • Demonstrates the Love of Christ to individuals receiving services on site with us through dynamic ministry opportunities in Hospitality, Chapel, and Meal Ministries

  • Actively advances the sharing of the Word of God through the Coordination of Gospel focused chapel experiences by volunteers in our local community of faith for our guests in attendance to nightly chapels

  • When necessary, conducts the chapel experience themselves in absence of volunteer provision, consisting of preaching and/or providing meaningful worship opportunities for guests at the Burnside Shelter

General Functions

  • Directly coordinate the work of Evening Ministry Groups, Mission Trips, and other partners in ministry on site. This includes, the scheduling, equipping and encouraging of individuals and groups in those roles.

  • Oversee placement for all Burnside Shelter volunteer roles, seeking to fill every opportunity with the best possible match. Defining and communicating needs to the Volunteer team

  • Coordinating the schedule of breakfast volunteers and other volunteer roles, as necessary

  • Work in collaboration with the NLM Volunteer Coordinator and the Community involvement manager to ensure that PRM volunteer mission teams are provided a rich service experience

  • Support the work in conjunction with other Burnside Shelter staff on site, serving our guests and providing ministry support when called upon, with a focus on the volunteer experience

  • Facilitate church involvement at PRM through recruitment and training opportunities, occasionally occurring on weekends

  • Participate in Burnside Shelter and Volunteer Team staff meetings

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • College degree in related field or experience equivalent

  • Strong administrative skillset around scheduling, recognition, and tracking of many individual volunteers and groups

  • Enthusiasm and passion towards serving individuals experiencing homelessness

  • Effective ability to communicate with groups, individuals, within presentations and tours around our ministry vision

  • Acts with integrity, honesty and knowledge to promote the culture, values and mission of Portland Rescue Mission

  • Ministers as a highly-relational, Christ-centered, joyful servant

  • Prompt and thorough in job performance, self-starter

  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player

  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned

  • Creative and logical problem solving, able to learn quickly

  • Experience in Mac and Microsoft Windows software

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
