Work Unit Description

The advanced practice provider (APP) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged to serve as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a respective specialty area. The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP delivers preventative, primary and acute healthcare services to adult individuals; provides advanced education to students, peers, and others; and, contribute to new knowledge and/or technology by conducting or participating in research.

Functions/Duties of Position

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The inpatient Cardiovascular Medicine Advanced Practitioner (AP) (physician assistant/nurse practitioner) will be an integral member of the OHSU-Cardiovascular Medicine team. The AP will work in partnership with faculty physicians, fellows, residents, and other providers to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the cardiovascular medicine inpatient arena. The AP duties will include:

  • Providing direct clinical care to patients admitted to our non-teaching service and to our post-procedure observation patients as a part of a 24 hour staffed advanced practitioner service
  • Caring for general cardiology and adult congenital patients through all phases of the patient care continuum to include pre-procedure and EP post-procedure observation patients
  • Maintaining and updating most cardiovascular pre-printed order sets for the clinical service and be familiar with active cardiovascular treatment protocols
  • Interfacing closely with the inpatient pharmacy and nursing team in a clinical and teaching capacity
  • Offering educational support through OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development and assessment of program curricula for professional specialty area; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects and assessment measures
  • Teaching program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes along with academic advising and career related counseling for students
  • Fostering advances in healthcare by participating in research activities in specialty area; including but not limited to identifying protocols to improve care delivery; contributing to development of new devices to effectively treat disease; performing clinical trials using human or animal subjects to determine the effectiveness and effects of devices
  • Demonstrating success or productivity in the field as evidenced by securing research funding, publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role
  • 1- 5 years of clinical experience as an Advanced that demonstrates ability to fulfill responsibilities for the specific role
  • ACLS certification
  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work
  • Ability to work nights/weekends required depending on team schedule

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using Epic EMR
