Sr. Facilities & Maintenance Manager

We are currently recruiting for the Sr. Facilities & Maintenance Manager to join the Benchmade Knife Company team. The Sr. Facilities & Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing the direction, health and continuity of the production maintenance & facilities teams, equipment set and building infrastructure. The Sr. Facilities & Maintenance Manager’s key objectives are to minimize equipment downtime, strengthen the asset pool and build a flexible team that continues to support a fast-paced business. One of the primary focuses of this role is to further develop and integrate Benchmade’s CMMS with the greater operations team in order to drive visibility and understanding of the maintenance and facilities program. This position plays a key role in the direction and execution of our company’s growth trajectory and will be required to track and report on KPI’s to senior leadership. The role will be responsible for leading a cross functional team of individuals to drive optimal equipment & facilities OEE performance across all shifts.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the department resources and personnel to drive a world class campus wide maintenance program

  • Develop and integrate CMMS with operations team’s objectives to ensure directional alignment of key focus areas

  • Establish and communicate appropriate KPI’s and visual management dashboards to track department effectiveness

  • Direct leadership of maintenance crews covering a 24/7 operating capability to drive OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness/Industry 4.0).

  • Create robust preventative maintenance programs tailored to the equipment and infrastructure on site

  • Define and document preventive maintenance, calibration and frequency by machine

  • Maintain the minimum spare parts inventory while being mindful of budget considerations

  • Quantify and monitor asset health & cost of ownership

  • Identify critical failure points with mitigation plans to minimize risk

  • Must sync with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and Security teams to ensure department activity is in compliance with State & Federal regulations, and company policies & guidelines (EPA, LOTO, Confined Space, Fall Hazard Protection, Hot Work, UPC, Building Codes, etc.)

  • Oversee vendor relationships, including selecting vendors, establishing metrics and service level agreements, monitoring vendor performance and working with vendors to resolve issues

  • Develop and implement training programs to create a well-rounded technical team that has an intimate knowledge of the equipment set

  • Work with individual team members to establish performance standards and goals, and frequently review their performance in one-on-one settings to ensure they meet their goals

  • Demonstrate strong sense of urgency, organization, and prioritization to ensure minimal downtime to production

  • Coordinate external vendor work activities for equipment maintenance and calibration

  • Facilitate discussions regarding external support and diagnostics

  • Develop and manage financial budget for facilities and maintenance departments

  • Validate the effectiveness of the equipment repair and maintenance activities through visual and physical inspection practices. This will require reports to be provided as needed

  • Evaluate impact of new equipment and assist in capital equipment requests & planning projects.

  • Participate in long-term planning and budget preparation.

  • Maintain the area & work practices at a high level of organization utilizing 6S principles


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other related degree, or 7-10 years of supervision experience in a manufacturing company. This role will also require 7-8 years of experience working in a maintenance position in a manufacturing environment. Equivalency to the qualification standard will also be considered.

  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude with excellent root cause problem solving skills

  • Experience working with and developing CMMS to drive and track maintenance programs

  • Firm grasp of system controls & electrical components

  • Experience in diagnostic repair with NC, CNC, and PLC devices on grinders, milling machines, lathes, and cutoff saws.

  • Familiar using vibratory analysis, thermology, tribology, ultrasonics, etc.

  • Strong knowledge of machine shop equipment and processes.

  • Ability to interpret and understand print drawings and sketches

  • Excellent math skills

  • Ability to read and use precision instruments, including micrometers, calipers, height gages, dial indicators, etc.

  • Knowledge of Lean principals as well as demonstrated Lean improvement experience with a relentless drive for continuous improvement.

  • Analytical mindset and capable of preparing and presenting reports, forecasts, and budgets for the team

  • Ability to effectively organize several distinct functions, establish levels of responsibility and delegate appropriate authority

  • Strong and effective communications skills, both with internal and external customers

  • Strong computer skills as well as the ability to navigate MS Office programs and CMMS systems (eMaints)

  • Working knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing employment practices and applicable health and safety laws

  • Able to work a flexible schedule as needed to support maintenance projects
