Climax Portable Machine Tools Engineer IV in Newberg, Oregon
Senior level engineering staff member that is responsible for development of highly engineered next generation products for our standard product portfolio as well as custom machine solutions for our global customer base. The role reports directly to the VP of Engineering and is responsible for ensuring complete and accurate engineering designs for New Product Development (NPD) projects, with a focus on meeting or exceeding the target price and gross margin targets provided by the sales and marketing teams. The position has a role on a cross functional product development team using Stage gate product development processes and ensuring clear and concise communication between the Product Development Team (PDT) members. The role also includes mentoring less experienced engineers as well as supporting technical discussions with customers and the Global Sales team members.

Must be capable of Quickly & Effectively modeling concepts and detailed designs using CAD software; (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
Define, Design and estimate a new product cost using existing and new components for a specific customer application.
Must be able to convert customer inputs into a conceptual design that can be shared and understood by the cross functional teams and the customer.
Must be capable of capturing key customer value driven features and translating those features into a product-specification with a focus on meeting the market drive price/profit targets.
Must have experience in developing product costing worksheets using known costs, similar too costs as well as projecting costs using supplier inputs as well as industry experience.
Must have experience with conceptual layout and design to support customer quotes & product development activities.
Able to effectively use engineering risk analysis tools on complex problems to ensure quality functional designs that meet agreed upon requirements.
Must have experience generating prints per ASME Y14.5-2009 standards with effective use of GD&T.
Possess strong verbal, written and cross functional communications skills. Must be able to work with cross functional Product Development Team (PDT) to ensure product features are defined, designed and validated prior to product launch.
Offer creative and innovative suggestions for solutions to problems while supporting new standard product definition requirements.
Work well with customers---effectively understanding their end product performance needs and define a clear complete specification.
Work proactively with manufacturing to ensure customer expectations are exceeded through Stage gate product development processes, resulting in a robust manufacturable design.
Capable of managing several projects at once, requiring strong time management skills.
Ability to dig into root cause of problems or cost reduction opportunities for quality solutions.
Provides direction to machine designer/drafter team.
Provides engineering based project management--cross functional leadership.
Provides overall systems solution focus.
Integrates with the customer (voice of customer) to understand complete application/needs.
Effectively considers implications of machine configuration on system/operator safety.
Supports final product testing/demonstrations with hands on approach and specification focus.
Manages product configurations and ensures functionality.
Works with Program Management to ensure deliverables are met for a proper launch.
Defines Verification and Validation steps that align with product specification
Capable of providing customer training when necessary on new products.
Ensures product documentation supports ISO processes
Presents solutions to Marketing, Customers and Sales.
Generates product Bills of Materials and Item Cards in ERP system.
Understands and abides by sound design for manufacturability principles.
Applies lean principles to work flow/project management for process improvements.
Establish partnerships with major key accounts with and interest of solving their product needs and supporting the Sales team with technical solutions.
Ability to work with project management on very complex, multimillion dollar machining solutions projects.
Capable of working with 3rdparty engineering firms with an interest of expanding engineering capacity when necessary.
Possesses "bottom line' results focus, based on customer needs and business objectives.
Provides assistance, input, supervision and management of resources on projects and mentoring of design and systems engineers.
Capable of presenting and supporting the business case for new product development.
Identify and define patent/IP protection opportunities.
Mentor, teach and coach design and systems engineers.
Ability to effectively conduct product and system risk assessments.
Handles stress in a professional manner, demonstrates the ability to get along with others, demonstrates successful attendance and punctuality, and works overtime / extra hours as required to meet business needs.
Travel to gather critical information to meet customer and business needs is required (passport needed). (Less than 15% travel, primarily domestic, international travel required on occasion.)

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelors in Engineering; 10-15 years of related design experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven ability to manage large projects to success.
Excellent skills in CAD, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Project. Familiar with computer planning systems such as MRP including Bills of Materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Office and travel have moderate noise levels. Machine/Product demonstrations and customer visits can have loud noise levels.
To meet customer requirements the employee may be asked to travel in an airplane and/or vehicle to get to customer work sites. At times, this position walks on or through high elevations, underground and/or confined spaces, around high voltage and in heavy industrial and/or construction work environments such as bridges, dams, mines, power plants, ship yards, etc. The employee must be able to work in hazardous working environments with possible extreme working conditions to complete customer training and/or applications support.
Noise levels may be extreme and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and usage is driven by customer requirements. Other required PPE includes, but is not limited to, steel toe boots, hardhat and safety glasses. Customer working environments can be extreme in regards to height, confined space, physical requirements and hazards.
