Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods Environmental Health & Safety/Loss Prevention Specialist in Milwaukie, Oregon

Position Overview: The Environmental Health and Safety/Loss Prevention Specialist assists with the development and implementation of programs encompassing health, safety, productivity and financial losses. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as pertains to the health, safety, and productivity of workers and environmental impact of the organization's operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Continually looks for ways to improve organization safety and integrates improvement procedures and strategies and assists with the development and implementation of a multi-year safety strategy improvement plan.

  • Consistently looks for ways to streamline and automate processes and aids in the implementation of a technology-based solution for tracking and minimizing injuries.

  • Serves as a member of the company safety committee.

  • Conducts accident claim investigations in compliance with federal, state, and insurance regulations and policies.

  • Performs regular physical inspections of all company buildings, property, equipment, and operations; identifies hazards and incidents of safety and regulatory non-compliance and recommends corrective measures.

  • Identifies and appraises conditions that could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates the potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents.

  • Aids in developing accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Supports safety activities of department managers to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout the organization.

  • Consults with all departments to provide expertise and ensure compliance with standards, processes, permits and enforces preventative measures.

  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and accidents and prepares reports.

  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting Environmental and Safety functions and ensures policies, procedures, and reporting are complying. (OSHA, DEQ, ODOT, etc.)

  • Stays abreast of changes in state and federal law regarding Environmental and Safety issues and communicates changes to management and supervisors, recommending changes when necessary.

  • Maintains a working relationship with outside regulatory agencies such as Fire, DEQ, OSHA, etc.

  • Prepares reports and recommends procedures to reduce injury and illness related to Environmental and Safety issues.

  • Represents organization with regards to safety, environmental and insurance audits.

  • Identifies and communicates site health and safety issues to management.

  • Ensures compliance with Bob’s Red Mill food safety policies and procedures including adherence to FDA regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

  • Investigates accidents and prepares reports for insurance carrier.

  • Maintains knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in the industry as it pertains to safety and regulation.

  • Serves as a member on the Emergency Response Team.

  • Other tasks and duties as may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Safety Corporate Services Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the regulatory landscape of the industry.

  • Excellent professional communication skills (both verbal and written) via phone, email and in person.

  • Computer and technology skills including the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation processing requirements.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental, safety, and health regulations.

  • Verbal and written communication skills.

  • Interpersonal/human relations skills.

  • Planning and organizational skills.

  • Ability to design, implement, and manage a company safety program.

  • Ability to conduct safety inspections of all company buildings, property, and equipment.

  • Ability to maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.

  • Approachability with employees and management.


  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, business, or a related field.

  • 3-5 years of professional environmental health and safety experience required.

  • First aid/CPR training or a certified safety professional (CSP) designation preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Position requires the ability to sit for up to approximately two hours at a time and retrieve information and documents from department staff within and outside the office area.

  • May be required to occasionally lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • May be exposed to significant extremes in temperature, noise, and dust.

  • Sitting, standing, walking, lifting, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, etc. are all included as this job requires varied responses to safety, health and environmental concerns as they arise.

Work Environment:

  • The work environment includes all areas of the facility (e.g. milling, production, warehouse, maintenance, office and all outside areas including the roof of the building).
