Our Design Manager (DM) is the leader/manager of the design team for a design projects, and is supported by design discipline task leaders and other design managers as needed. The DM is a partner to the Project Manager (PM) whose specific responsibilities include leadership in the application of our Project Delivery System, and the design delivery processes to achieve the following project delivery strategic objectives:
Health, safety, environmental responsibility
Help manage and exceed Client expectations for quality, schedule, and budget
Direct cost performance for design project specific targets
Design team expectations
Operational performance and business unit expectations
Specific duties include:
Planning the design project (scope, fee, resources and schedule)
Building, chartering and leading the design team
Facilitating effective communication between team members
Developing and implementing health and safety plans
Focusing on PM and client satisfaction
Managing assigned resources
Statusing the project and managing change
Managing senior consultants for conformance to quality plan
Meeting direct cost budget goals
The DM's primary responsibility is to ensure that all aspects of an assigned design project are completed successfully. They will also manage contract compliance with respect to the design effort, be available as a key point of contact with the client, and ensure that the PM and design team clearly understand the client’s requests; and that the client and PM clearly understand the ramifications of those requests on the engineering and construction budgets and schedules.
The purpose of the DM position is to ensure that the design portion of the assigned project is completed successfully, designed to cost, and facilitates the one team approach with procurement and construction. The DM achieves success by supporting, listening to, and managing the design team (including design staff, sub consultants/ subcontractors, and staff in the exporting office and in any other supporting offices).
The DM is a participant in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling, and performance. Additionally, the DM is responsible for the identification of schedule and cost variances, and the development and implementation of recommendations for corrective action for negative variances. The DM is also responsible for monitoring and control of the design scope and proactive change management.
Qualified candidate will have:
BS or MS Degree in Mechanical or Environmental Engineering, or other engineering discipline with a focus on water/wastewater systems
Minimum 10 years engineering experience, with at least 2 years managing multidiscipline design teams
In addition to the basic qualifications, the ideal candidate would meet the following preferred qualifications in terms of key duties:
Experience with Design-Build and/or EPC projects.
International project experience.
Resident Engineer or field start-up services experience.
