Job Summary/Purpose:

Support academic success of the College students. Provide personalized attention and offer own-pace learning to enrolled students within the College district. Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed. • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

  1. Be in the Writing Center ready to tutor during scheduled hours each week
  2. Follow the policies of the COCC Tutoring and Testing department governing tutors
  3. Follow the CRLA Tutor Code of Ethics
  4. Tutor COCC students in reading, writing, and study skills to support instruction
  5. Complete 10 hours of College Reading & Learning Association Tutor training within the first year of employment (paid time)
  6. Be, or become familiar with, academic writing assignments and structures
  7. Other duties as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. 1. Must be able to work with minimal supervision within a team environment. Must be able to take direction from all Tutoring and Testing staff and from all HR staff members 2. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter. Must have good interpersonal skills, including displaying empathy and developing rapport quickly and easily with new people 3. Must be comfortable with computers, including word processors and web-based applications. Must be comfortable with other office equipment (copier, fax machine, scanner, phones) 4. Must be able to work with a diverse population and interface with college staff and the public effectively and diplomatically, both in-person and on the telephone

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are regular, per the established work schedule. Work is performed in an ordinary office, mostly sitting. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting under ten pounds for 15 percent of the time. Computer screen is used approximately 20 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in English or a similar field.
  2. Proficiency with writing, grammar, spelling, editing, and proofreading.
  3. Must complete 10 hours of College Reading & Learning Association tutor training within the first year of employment (paid time).

Special Qualifications:

Desirable Qualifications: • Familiarity with academic writing at the community college level or with COCC writing curriculum. • Experience as a writing teacher or as a professional writer • Experience tutoring writing at the community college level • Experience with academic research • CRLA tutor training certifications • Appropriate interpersonal skills to work with stressed student populations.
