Job Summary/Purpose:

The Forestry Technology Program seeks qualified individuals to serve as an Instructional Assistant. Assistants will assist the primary course instructor in the education of students in the lab experience. Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed. • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist during Forestry program course labs under the direction of the primary instructor, answering student questions regarding lab exercises, providing instruction in lab procedures, monitoring of safety during labs requiring use of hand tools or power equipment, administering of lab quizzes, grading of lab quizzes or assignments. Assist in development of lab and lecture exercises and curriculum under direction of primary instructor.
  2. Conduct layout of field lab exercises, checkout and in of equipment as needed. Perform minor maintenance/cleaning of lab equipment in the tool room or field.
  3. Conduct data entry and analysis of lab data.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge in the field of Forestry at the technician level.
  2. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
  3. Visual ability, corrected, to enable assistant to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
  4. Familiarity with tools (both hand and power) that are used in Forestry.
  5. Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer-controlled mixed media presentations.
  6. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
  7. Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Forestry Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis.
  9. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
  10. Ability to work with Forestry Program Director, faculty, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.
  11. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
  12. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are regular, per the established work schedule.Work is typically performed standing. Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Education: High School diploma or GED
  2. Experience: One year of coursework in Forestry or related field

Special Qualifications:

  1. Education: AAS degree in Forestry or related field.
  2. Experience: Teaching experience in a Community College setting preferred.
